Hello and welcome to the Ottawa Independent Writers' 2008 catalogue, an initiative designed to showcase the talent of Ottawa-area authors who are members of OIW.

Since its founding in 1984, OIW has provided a gathering place for people with a passion for weaving words together in a wide variety of formats.

OIW provides a venue where writers can share experiences and learn new aspects of their craft. We empathize with writers having trouble getting started and we celebrate with those whose works are published. Along the way, we try to give them the tools necessary to improve their work.

This catalogue, printed for the first time this year, is one of those tools. We think it will be particularly helpful in an era when many Canadian authors, especially those who work with small publishers, find it challenging to have their work noticed by book stores, book distributors, libraries, school boards and consumers who love to read books.

TO ORDER BOOKS FROM THE CATALOGUE, PLEASE CONTACT THE AUTHORS DIRECTLY BY USING THE EMAILS OR PHONE NUMBERS NEXT TO EACH BOOK LISTING.

Although OIW's emphasis is on writing, we also focus on the business of writing, which includes finding a publisher, editing, cover design, promotion and marketing, networking and keeping track of finances. Writers who need help in any of these areas are connected through OIW with members or outside experts who can offer valuable advice.

OIW serves the interests of all writers, from novice to seasoned scribe. Our members are involved in advertising, biography, business communications, academia, children's literature, literary publicity, memoirs, translation, freelance writing, consumer affairs, drama, education, fiction and non-fiction, government, health, high technology, humour, magazines, music, mystery, journalism, novels, personal histories, poetry, science, short stories, speculative fiction, speeches, screenwriting, travel and more.

I am confident those who purchase the books on behalf of book stores, distributors, schools, libraries and gift shops, as well as members of the public, will find a treasure trove of excellent titles in the pages that follow.

On behalf of OIW and its members, I thank you in advance for supporting the books written by our members.

Sincerely,

George Laidlaw
President, Ottawa Independent Writers
