When and Where
Meetings are held at the Library and Archives Canada Building, 395 Wellington, Room 156, at 7 p.m. Socializing begins at 6:30 p.m. The entry fee for guests and non-members is $10 and this amount is discounted from the membership fee for those who decide to join.
Please visit the Library's web site for parking and accessibility information (www.lac-bac.gc.ca/visit-us/ ). Attendees with accessibility or hearing issues are encouraged to inform members of the OIW executive upon arrival at the meeting room. We will be glad to provide you with a seat at the front of the room and request our speakers to accommodate your needs as well.

Thursday October 28: Networking Skills
A guest speaker will explain what networking is all about and how authors and others can use networking to to find resources and information that will help them do research, write books and work on other projects.

How to find an agent and what an agent can do for you.
Tuesday, December (date to come): OIW Christmas party and poetry contest
Thursday January 27, 2011: How To Get Started on Your Book
Ottawa author Nicole McGill will explain how writers begin, organize and end their stories.
Thursday February 24, 2011: Reading Night and Annual General Meeting
OIW members will vote for a new board of directors and discuss OIW business. Some will read their work.

Everyone needs to know how to make the best of any opportunity to get their message across, whether in person, in a panel discussion or meeting, or on that valuable radio or TV interview. Barbara Florio Graham, author of Five Fast Steps to Low-Cost Publicity will show the crucial steps in preparing for interviews, how to select salient points to make your appearance interesting, how to dress, sit, use the mic, handle props and rehearse.
These techniques are useful in all situations where you want to make the best first impression, so this is not just for authors.

Saturday, November 6: Flash Fiction/Short Story Workshop
Ottawa Author Molly O'Connor will run this workshop. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Library and Archives Canada, 395 Wellington St. Room 156. Cost: $20 per person, includes refreshments. To register, contact Mike Montreuil at mikemontreuil@sympatico.ca .
April 24: Have you ever wanted to be a technical writer? A proposal writer? A ghostwriter?
The Professional Writers Association of Canada (PWAC), Ottawa Chapter, is hosting a seminar open to members and non-members. This two-hour event offers an introduction to technical writing, proposal writing and ghostwriting. Guest panellists are Kerry Surman, a teacher in the Technical Writer graduate certificate program at Algonquin College, Heidi Lasi, a communications specialist whose background includes corporate and foundation proposal writing and development, and Karen Opas-Lanouette, an experienced editor, writer, and seasoned ghostwriter. Saturday, April 24, 2010 , from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the Ottawa Public Library Main Branch Auditorium, 120 Metcalfe St. $25 for the general public or $20 for students/members of writers’ organizations. An early-bird discount is available for participants who register online by sending their name and contact information to pwacottawa@gmail.com by April 22nd. The discount will be applied at the door.

March 13: Ottawa Independent Writers: SOCIAL NETWORKING WORKSHOP
NOTE: The workshop is full but we need people's cheques to confirm their attendance. Those who contact OIW after Feb. 9 will be put on an overflow list and contacted if a seat opens up. Based on the popularity of this event, OIW may arrange another social networking workshop in the Spring.
Attendees will not be using computers during the workshop. The two speakers will have computers on hand and will use them for demonstrations and their presentations.
Confused about Facebook? Clueless about Twitter? Not sure how to connect to LinkedIn? On Saturday, March 13, Ottawa writer/editor Murray McGregor and David Shaw of Ottawa's Workplace Institute will explain how members of the writing community can use these and other online social networking tools to connect with other writers, conduct research and promote their published works. Attendees should have a basic understanding of computers, web browsing and email.

About the Speakers:
MURRAY MCGREGOR is a believer in social media and particularly active on Twitter, LinkedIn, Delicio.us and Facebook. At first a skeptic, he has embraced social media especially for the values and community he finds in it. He has worked with bloggers as an editor and will start a blog himself some day. McGregor has been an independent writer and editor for the past 10 years. His most recent major assignment was with Army Public Affairs as Content Coordinator on the Army national Web team. For 19 years he owned Leeds County Books in Brockville.
DAVID SHAW is a senior information-management consultant who has managed knowledge, eLearning and content-management-system projects in the US, Canada, UK, Nigeria, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, Greenland, Alaska, and Trinidad & Tobago. He has more than 15 years IT experience on more than 90 projects, including as a former Director of Research & Development at an eLearning software company and as a Director of Project Delivery at an XML content-management systems integrator. He is a Professional in Critical Infrastructure Protection (PCIP) and has wide business experience and has written several books and numerous magazine articles. His experience with developing online communities began with videotext, including the world’s largest videotext network spanning Alaska, Canada, continental USA, Greenland and Denmark. In the early days of the Internet he developed BBS using Worldgroup, delivering the online version of Hansard. His current focus is information-management architectures for Enterprise (Web) 2.0, especially the role of social networking tools.
WRITERS' BOOTCAMP AND RETREAT: May 13-16
Ottawa Independent Writers presents a Writers' Bootcamp and Retreat from May 13 to 16, 2010 at the Marguerite Centre in Pembroke, Ontario. For three-and-a-half days up to 20 participants can either take instruction (Writers' Bootcamp) from writer Larry McCloskey on Writing For Children, or work on their own literary projects (Writers' Retreat).
Prices range from $360 to $415 for the Bootcamp, and $260 to $315 for the Retreat, and include a comfortable single room, eight full meals (Friday - Sunday), and nightly networking and reading sessions in an idyllic country setting.
Full payment will reserve your space. The deadline for registration is May 5, 2010 .
